Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer, a Freshman living in Billings, MT, has always felt ordinary, average, boring. His older brother is a star football player, his older sister is a genius. And his dad left before he was even born. The only thing special about him, or so he thinks, is his relationship with his Uncle Mike, a Green Beret he’d love to be like someday.
Little does Matt know that a danger lurks in the state park near his house. On a weekend camping trip with his uncle, a strange creature attacks their campsite, knocking Mike unconscious, and leaving Matt in their tent to face his fear alone. He finds a strange knife in Mike’s backpack and somehow kills the creature, discovering something horrible—monsters are real.
Even worse? The knife had a secret. It was made to hunt monsters…and it chooses who can wield it. In Matt, it’s found its new wielder, and the knife doesn’t want anyone else. Now, Matt finds himself at the center of a military operation, fighting to rid the world of walking nightmares, all while trying to keep it a secret from everyone he knows.
