Jake Thurman, a man struggling to make it as a recognized author, leads an interesting, and simple life. The rent is never paid, and the freelance work proves a tough gig, but he has a few steady deals with some of the magazines. His love life is one that most men crave but never acquire, the women help him, love him, sex him, sometimes out of pity, but primarily because he needs them as they need him—the loneliness gets to all of us.
As Jake's life begins to spiral out of control, his sister Anna adds fuel to the fire with a crazy situation she created in their hometown of Savannah, Georgia. Jake decides to head down there, from New York City, to help her, but not before his old friend Roy appears at his doorstep.
With Roy attached, as an unwelcomed guest, an eviction notice stuck to his door, Jake leaves his failing life behind. He trounces around with Roy, boozing, sleeping with prostitutes, getting beat to hell by a pimp, and eluding the women who began to care for him.
When Jake finally decides to make the trip to Georgia, Roy tags along for the ride, and they barrel down the east coast in an unregistered, Chevy Nova with stolen license plates, with no self-restraint. What takes place on the trip is a pandemonium of sex, booze, murder, and self-discovery with twists of unexpected events as these two adult-delinquents weave their tangled web to a horrifying conclusion. What follows, in the end, is a calming of resolutions befitting to a crazy life of self-indulgence, as Jake Thurman never lost sight of dream.
